All about Lactation & Breastfeeding
Lactation is nothing but the production of milk by the mammary glands situated with in the adipose tissues of the breast. As you are all aware breastfeeding protects your baby from a long list of illness. The hormone oxytocin is produced in response to the birth of a new baby, and it both stimulates uterine contractions and begins the lactation process. For the first few hours of nursing, a special fluid called colostrum is delivered; which is high in nutrients, fats, and antibodies, to protect the newborn from infection. Thereafter, the amount of milk produced is controlled primarily by the hormone prolactin, which is produced in response to the length of time the infant nurses at the breast.
How often to breastfeed
Newborn babies want to feed on demand, usually 8 to 12 times in a 24 hour period for the first two to four weeks. Watch your baby for feeding cues, such as increased alertness or activity, mouthing, rooting and suckling.. If your baby is sleeping and does not show feeding cues in three hours during the day, try to wake your baby. You should feed your baby throughout the day and night. Majority of the moms are worried whether they have enough milk for the baby.If your baby is gaining weight according to the growth chart standards and he can sleep peacefully or stay calm after a feed for at least one hour, you need not worry.
Some food items that improved lactation are:
